We Are Here

“Somewhere in the distance, out in the pitch-black frigid water they prayed for a sign. Straining to hear, to see, to breathe, as an icy illusion of warmth wraps them in an invitation to surrender. Suddenly, a tiny glint of light appears from a white phosphorous flare. The faint drone of our engines coming from the darkness sent the message that someone was there… and that was enough. That was enough to find the strength to fight, and the strength to survive. The message was simple, “we are here.” They didn't need to know our names, the color of our skin, who we voted for or if we believed in God. They only needed to know we were there - and that was enough.”

I wrote that in 2013 in reflection of my service in the mid 80’s and ironically, it's never been more relevant now. Messages of hope in uncertain times can indeed keep you going, but hope alone has an expiration date. This has been the temperament at BES from the beginning when our initial energy breakthrough was made a few years ago. It was a breakthrough that was 40 years in the making and for a moment it seemed like my work was complete. ”Pop the champagne and call the press!” However, in it's initial state our experimental device couldn’t do anything more than merely prove the technology worked. That’s when I realized that as much as we wanted to celebrate, the work was just beginning. Without hesitation we geared up and got busy again.
With no ability to do tangible work, our discovery was just another open-ended promise that might help in the future. We’re all getting tired of hearing about advancements that are years or decades off, when people need help today. Advancements that are not only projected in our distant future but will require unheard of financial backing to achieve a theoretical goal, or come too late to fend off environmental catastrophe... or too late for families drowning in the icy grip of financial burdens.
Today, this message is for all the people who are now, or are soon to be sitting in the dark, the cold, losing hope. We have successfully achieved our next milestone goal of tangible, clean, and safe energy production. Energy that can power homes, cars, boats, farm equipment and hospitals in remote locations. A light from this new technology is here, once again sending the message of hope that someone is there, and WE are on the way.
